FA Cup Final 2024 The Manchester Derby
The 2024 FA Cup final is the second consecutive Manchester derby final with both Manchester teams reaching the final in a repeat of 2023. In last year’s edition, two goals from IIkay Gundogan won the trophy for Pep Guardiola’s men. Manchester City is on the track to win the iconic English trophy for the 8th time. As for Man United, they are in successive FA Cup finals for the first time since 2005. Can Manchester United beat their local rivals and get their only trophy of the season?

Manchester City’s path to the final
Manchester City had a relatively smooth ride to the FA Cup final this season, thanks to their generally remarkable performance. Their campaign started with a 5-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the fifth round. Two goals came from Man City’s golden boy, Phil Foden. The Citizens came up against the Spurs in the 4th round.
This encounter proved frustrating for Guardiola’s men, A late lone goal from Nathan Ake made the difference. Man City faced Luton Town in the 5th round securing a 6-2 victory away from home. Erling Haaland made his supremacy as a striker clear, as he netted five goals. Kevin De Bruyne assisted all his first four goals.
The club faced Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium qith a comfortable 2-0 victory by way of Bernardo Silva. In the semi-finals, Man City defeated Chelsea by a lone goal to secure their place in the final, thanks again to a late goal from Bernardo Silva.
Manchester United’s path to the final
The road to the final has seen them play Wigan Athletic in the fifth round winning the game 2-0. The goals came from Portugal national team players Bruno Fernandez and Diogo Dalot. In the fourth round, the Red Devils beat Newport County by 4-2. Will Evans and Bryn Morris canceled the two goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes. Hojlund and Antony wrapped up the victory for Manchester United.
The next game took the team to City Ground where they defeated Nottingham Forest by 1-0. The quarterfinal was Manchester United vs Liverpool against their long-term rivals Liverpool. The game went to extra time, and the Red Devils won 4-3. This result has so far been the best game of the season for Man United fans.
In this epic and dramatic encounter, substitute Amad came on to score the winning goal in the last seconds of the match. In the semis, Manchester United was wasteful. They squandered a 3-0 lead over Coventry City to end the final scoreline at 3-3. However, a 4-2 penalty victory pushed the Reds into the final. Whilst fans were not overly happy with the manner of winning the game, this will be forgotten come final day.
Who will Win the Tie?
By looking at past statistics and each team’s performance this season, Manchester City are the favorites to win this tie. However, as many people will appreciate, form goes out of the window for derby games. At the beginning of the competition, City started as favorites. The Blues are currently on track to win their 5th premier league title in six years, provided that they win all their last 5 fixtures.
Whilst Man City only narrowly edged out by Real Madrid in the Champions League, thanks to a penalty shootout. The likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Doku are hungry for this grand prize. Erling Haaland suffered a muscle injury. Hopefully, he will be ready before the final.
Manchester United have not performed up to expectations this season, however with a victory in the final, this will cover the cracks shown in the Premier League.
Whilst the team has suffered a campaign blighted by injuries including to Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw, the season will be a disappointment if they don’t secure victory.
The FA Cup is always watched by millions of fans around the UK and internationally and this year will be no different.
